Prostate Cancer Treatment St. Louis: Cancer specialist in St. Louis takes Prostate Cancer Treatment to a New Level...

New! LIVEN program expands to include prostate cancer patients

The staff at the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital views each patient with unique physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Through a multidisciplinary approach, our prostate cancer patients benefit by having direct access to a medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, surgeon, oncology nurses, dietitian, social worker and complementary therapies in one location. The multidisciplinary approach to prostate cancer care allows clinical staff to provide the most effective course of treatment to patients.

At the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital, our data reflects a high rate of cure and satisfaction with prostate cancer treatment. Our team treats prostate cancer with surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and hormone therapy. After patients have completed traditional methods of treatment, some are encouraged to participate in a proactive program called LIVEN (Lifestyle InterVention with Exercise and Nutrition).

Regardless of low or high risk prostate cancer, the majority of men do very well with treatment. Large institutions have indicated that the leading cause of death in prostate cancer survivors is not prostate cancer, but cardiovascular disease. For that reason, the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital developed the LIVEN program which addresses some the basic causes of cardiovascular disease–poor diet and obesity.

LIVEN is a successful program for our breast and prostate cancer survivors with benefits including weight loss, improved energy level, and lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Many of the participants are able to eliminate blood pressure medications or cholesterol lowering drugs after participation in the program. All patients enrolled in LIVEN are encouraged to engage in regular aerobic exercise and maintain a healthy diet.

LIVEN incorporates a unique technology specifically designed to measure a patient’s energy needs or metabolic rate through a breathing test performed at rest and with exercise. Test results also provide information on how well your body metabolizes fat and will be used to formulate a tailored diet and exercise plan. This individualized plan includes close monitoring which helps prostate cancer patients reach their targeted goals.

Only patients receiving cancer care at the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital can enroll in LIVEN. A coordinator works with each patient to facilitate entry into the program. For more information about LIVEN, call 636-916-9920 and ask for the LIVEN coordinator.
